Approaching a Woman: How Your Friends and Her Friends Fit In

Picture a perfect pick-up that happens in the movies.

A beautiful woman is sitting at the bar by herself, sipping a cosmopolitan. Shes all dolled up and wearing a glamorous outfit. Out of nowhere, a charming man comes up and sits next to her, striking up a conversation. Time passes, and without any distraction or interruption, they go home together.

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever seen this happen? Not very likely.

There are two important parts of a night out that this popular movie scene leaves out: her friends and your friends. While it is fine to go out solo, most of the time you will either have a wingman out with you, or be out with other friends that you came with.
At the same time the girl youre interested in most likely did not come alone. What kind of girl dolls herself up for an hour and a half just to go to the bar by herself? It does happen from time to time, but most of the time, theyll be with girls, and often guys, as well.

How most guys handle this is walking straight up to the girl and not addressing the friends. Big mistake.

Now, I know what you are thinking... "This sounds harmless."

Luckily, that is why I am here for you! Because...this sin is really dangerous!

If you simply walk into a group of hot girlfriends and plan on just talking to your "hottie", then you are in for a giant surprise, because if you try to isolate with her, you'll be finished quickly.

Here's why:

Singling out one girl FORCES her to talk only with you. Now you are making her ignore her friends.

Now, she doesn't want to be mean to her friends, so she will politely -or impolitely- blow you off to rejoin her friends. Her friends don't want to be blown off either... so when they see this happening, they frequently will "save her" from you by dragging her away.

You may not understand this, but this is how women think.

However, there is an easy solution!

The solution lies in winning her and her friends over at the same time. Then, and only then, you move to talk to her separately.

It really is that simple.

So instead of talking to one girl, talk to the entire group. Once you have won the group over, you will be able to talk with the girl you are interested in.

Another mistake that men often make is ignoring their own friends, once theyre in set with a beautiful girl.

This one is simple...

Let's say you're talking to a HOT girl... named "Candy"...

First of all, congrats!

But then, one of your friends comes up to you and says, "Hi!" and you say, "Hey bro, this is Candy... anyway..." and continue talking only to Candy! You dont even turn to face him, but stay enraptured talking to the girl and obviously want to limit interruption in your conversation flow with her.

You see, you are so wrapped up in this new "hottie" you just met, that you unintentionally ignore your friend and continue your conversation with Candy...

This is a big, big mistake...

This tells Candy that a perfect stranger you just met is more important to you than your friend. She knows that she is the "perfect stranger."

What do you think that says about you?

It says that you are desperate, whether or not you actually are.

Desperation is a major turn off because it tells her you are trying very hard to get her. She already knows she has you. The chase is off and the attraction dies.

So don't ignore your friends!

When your friend walks up to you and her, turn completely to face him, and pay more attention to him then her, until he moves on. Then you can go back to talking to her exclusively.

And, remember...

Be Social,

-Mehow

Reaching The World Through Satellite

If you and your family are one of the many thousands and thousands who live in rural areas, then you know how frustrating it can be to not have access to cable television or anything but dial up internet access. It can make you feel like you are way behind the times.

If you use an old fashioned home antennae hooked up to your home to tune in your television programming, you can only hope for moderate reception of a few channels at best and everyone always has to watch the same programs even on different televisions.

In today's world, especially if you have children, you know how aggravating this situation can be. Every kid wants there own television and computer. Dial up internet connections can be slow, even when you up grade to their best speed available.

Before now the only way to get better television and internet was if you pilled up stakes and moved to town.

Rural life can sometimes have its drawbacks, but since satellite access is available now to everyone, decent television programming and high speed internet is no longer one of those drawbacks.

Businesses like Direct TV and Hughes Net have made these rural handicaps a thing of the past. Now rural home owners and renters can have the same great technological advantages as those who live in urban and suburban areas.

If you are one of those who have had satellite television installed in your rural home, then you are already experiencing the joy of being let out of the programming dark ages. There are hundreds of channel options available depending on which package you choose. Parental controls and pay per view are two great features of satellite television.

If you are now using a satellite internet connection, you can surf the web at the best possible speed available anywhere. Every computer user in your home can surf the internet at the same time with no interference to your phone line. It's a brand new life!

If you and your family live in a rural area and are not enjoying the same benefits that others in you community are, then what are you waiting for? Satellite television is no more, if not less expensive, than some cable companies that you do not even have access to anyway.

You can have a satellite internet connection with all its great features for the about the same cost as you can get internet access through your phone company and it is so much faster. Open up your family to all the satellite advantages and catch up with the rest of the world!

Retire to Asia - And Why

In reading this article you may realize that the best part of your life could be in Asia, and the best time is now.

The theme of most retirement articles is the best place to retire in the USA. However, according to the AARP about 80 percent of Americans do not plan to move when they retire. Work a lifetime, and with the door open to have a fresh start in retirement, one just stays in the same town, the same house, the same routine. There must be a better quality of life in retirement, and there is! Nowadays, more retirees are not only moving from their house to another city or state, but are moving out of the United States.

Over recent years I have had an increasing number of friends write to me about my life in Asia. The motives behind the questions have varied from political discontentment to financial. Many of the concerns are related to the high cost of living, including heating and A/C bills, taxes, grocery bills, the cost of gasoline, medical bills, dental bills, home repair bills, and list goes on. There is no doubt about it, the cost of living in the USA goes higher each day. Many of those who write to me are not really enjoying their Golden Years but are just getting by. If you are in the stage of retirement planning or are now retired that should concern you, as each day is precious and we should be enjoying life to its fullest. The best is yet to come.

Travel with me down a different road of thought. I have lived in retirement for the past 7 years in Asia, in the beach resort city of Pattaya, Thailand. Being a tourist destination, you immediately picture an area with a beautiful bay view, fine restaurants, and entertainment galore. It is more than just that. It is so easy to get around the city using public transportation that my car sits in the driveway. We have modern shopping centers, movie complexes, health spa's, fitness centers, golf courses, and even an IT center with 5 floors of computers, mobile phones, and electronics. Pattaya has not one, but two International Standard hospitals. Health care is affordable. Being a tourist city, the Thai staff in most stores and restaurants speak English, German, Russian, and other languages. Language is not a problem, but learning a little basic Thai is both fun and useful. A Hollywood movie with English sound track, shown in a high tech theater costs around $2.50. The air-conditioned city bus is 50 cents, private buses around 25 cents. A Thai food-bar meal runs around 75 cents. We have clubs that meet weekly where the foreign community can get together. They have Open Forums where newcomers to the community can ask questions. The glimpse just given is representative of life for foreigners in most Asian countries. A stress free, quality lifestyle on your retirement pension.

Why Asia? Because Asia is the most exciting, the most user friendly continent on earth. Luxury living for pennies - not just "getting by" on your retirement pension. The United States and Europe are becoming almost impossibly expensive to live and retire in. Learn more about the Asian countries, which ones to consider for retirement, and why. If funds permit, plan a holiday visit to some of the countries of interest. Alternatively, the Internet is a great source of information. Also, one can join an Internet blog or group and gain information and tips from persons already living overseas. As I said in my opening, the best part of your life could be in Asia, and the best time is now.

The Nursing Shortage in America Today

By some experts' estimates, there will be a shortage of nearly 350,000 nurses (RNs) by the year 2020. And while this is significantly lower than earlier estimates, this is still not good news. The nursing shortage in the United States is coming right at the time when baby boomers are aging and the extension of the national average life span. Who is going to care for these people when they become older or have health problems? That's the biggest concern for health care professionals today.

Why are there so few nurses?

The first question that most people have when it comes to the nursing shortage is - why are there so few nurses? It doesn't seem to be an unpopular profession, so why aren't more men and women choosing nursing for their career path? There are a number of possible answers.

  • Lack of funds for education costs

  • Scheduling difficulties

  • Overworking of current nurses drives them out of the system

  • Aging of nurses leads to retirement

  • Longer life spans of patients, leading to more patients

  • Health care systems' reliance on LPNs, MAs, and home health care aides

Educational costs for college are skyrocketing for all majors and professions, making it difficult for anyone to obtain a college education. Many people who consider the nursing field can not afford the classes they need to take and they do not want to take out student loans to cover the costs.

Nursing classes are sometimes scheduled at odd hours of the day. It makes it difficult for those with job and family responsibilities to make their classes.

Some current nurses are quitting their jobs to take on a new career. The lack of nurses means more responsibility for current nurses, which can lead them to feeling burnout and frustrated.

Of course, many current nurses are nearing retirement, which is further creating a shortage in the nursing field.

The longer life spans of patients are leading to more patients than ever, which is also contributing to the shortage of nurses. This is making it very difficult for nurses to keep up with their workload.

And finally, the health care system's desire to cut costs has led to increased hiring of LPNs and MAs. While these medical professionals are helping to ease the workload, there is still a driving demand for qualified RNs.

What is this doing to our Healthcare System?

To say that the lack of nurses isn't significantly affecting the health care system is untrue. Since there are fewer nurses, there are a number of effects being felt by patients, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies.

  • Less one on one patient care

  • More burnt out nurses

  • Less attention to patient needs

  • Problems with medication dispensing

  • More medical errors

Patients are beginning to notice that they aren't able to have that one on one care that helps them feel more comfortable when they are ill. Nurses have a number of patients to take care of and are often unable to stay with one patient for a long period of time.

What is being done about the problem?

Since the problem is hard to avoid, the next obvious question is - what is being done to help increase the number of nurses? There are several different tactics hat are being implemented:

  • More scholarships for nursing students

  • Better scheduling for nursing classes

  • Lower cost nursing degrees

  • Hiring bonuses for nurses

  • Advanced accelerated nursing degree programs

  • Higher salaries and benefits for new nurses

Though the nursing shortage is much smaller than it used to be due to these efforts to keep bringing in new nursing students, there is still much more to be done.

Where Women Gather!

I must digress from our ongoing conversation this week (A Women's Place blog) on passion, purpose and position!

Last evening, I had the privilege of sitting with four of the most dynamic women Ive met in years! Their energy, commitment to women and womens empowerment was a source of rejoicing and praise during the late night drive home from Ohio!

The background is that we are spearheading the launching of a new network associated with the nations largest organization for professional and executive women. The group includes some AWP community members as well.

Our plan includes a speech by one of the women who is, among other things, a sought-after motivational speaker. When I was asked what I wanted her to speak about, I replied,

Where women gather - there is Power!

It was evident last evening as each of us shared a wee-bit about the journey that brought us to the table at Perkins near Cincinnati. And no where was it more evident than in the bond that quickly formed among us with the result that before we left the parking lot - a plan was already hatching to find the means and mechanism for mentoring women from victim to victory - regardless of the life situation where they find themselves victims!

We are powerful! We have the power! Although many of the very institutions that should have provided the tools for empowerment have failed to do so - due either to ignorance or by design - women come to a point in life where we know we are powerful!

Where we gather and bring our individual potential and possibilities (our power), we possess awesome power to effect positive change - on ourselves, our families, our neighborhoods, communities and ultimately - the world at large!

When I speak of power, Im not talking about power over! Im talking about power for.

The power we possess to be one of the worlds richest sources of influence. Richest sources of positive change.

Women get things done!

We are the worlds great multi-taskers! We can cook, clean, plan, design and implement while holding the baby on one hip - so to speak! Right and left hemispheres dart back and forth evoking the creativity and artistry of the right half with the practical, strategic capability of the left!

It has taken years for us to recognize and openly promote the power we possess! It has taken us - women - saying so to the world and not letting any challenge stand in our way.

It is said that the ancient male feared the female because we were perceived as having the ability to create life - give birth. Without the modern knowledge of the procreative process - they variously considered us mystical or magical or in the least- shamans who were to be both held in awe and feared!

I could really go on one of my famous rants with all this, but thats not the point here!

The point is that the world, its institutions - religious or otherwise - are not going to do it for us! Theyre simply not!

We have to come together and do it for ourselves. Give ourselves and our sisters permission to be empowered.

Its within us! Its not something that comes to us from outside in one magical moment! Its there for the taking - the having!

But in many ways, weve bought into the lie that we are second class citizens - males without a certain part of their anatomy (oh that theory goes way back!).

Weve kept quiet in the lofts of great institutions that have taken Pauls admonition to remain silent literally - for all time.

Weve knelt at the altar of a little is better than nothing in the corporate marketplace as we struggled to climb to our rightful place given equal skills and equal abilities.

Having said all that, let me tell you that angry women wont bring change about! Radical feminists are not the answer. The Friedans have passed from the scene and the Steinems are fading away. Their influence may have been appropriate for the day; but no more!

In more and more places, I find males who respect us for what we bring to the table of life - not our femininity, but our intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, skill and ability!

The dawn rises! Our day has come! Let us not waste what has been won and let us not dally until the task is done!

Where women gather . . . . there is power!

Bring your powerful influence to the day!

Free Vs. Paid Web Hosting

In the journey of finding an appropriate host for your site, you may come across asking yourself: Why pay for web hosting when it is available for free? Paying for a hosting plan can be quite beneficial to most webmasters, though for some, a free host may also be capable of entirely supporting the needs of your site. This article intends to outline both free and paid hosting, to give you a better understanding of which your site should be committed to.

If you have been developing web pages for over one year, then chances are you are fit to be paying for web hosting. As an experienced coder and designer, you are familiar with some of the many frustrations involved with having a web site hosted on a free server. Probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of "free" hosting is unwanted advertisements on all of your pages. Unfortunately free hosts rely solely on these advertisements to earn money, and as such, there are very few of them that have no forced advertising. This simply means that visitors to your site are likely to see a 468x60 pixel banner advertisement on the top of each of your pages, or an appearing pop-up banner after each click-through to a subsequent page on your site. Such features add unprofessionalism to pages that are well-designed.

Downtime is another factor experienced with many free web hosts. Because you are not paying for the service you are using, gives the host the ability to be more flexible when it comes to dependability. A free host is rarely bothered if some of its users are dissatisfied with the service, for they are of little or no benefit to them. In relation to downtime being greater than that of a paid web host, customer support is also lacking. The majority of free hosts do not have the proper funds to hire a customer support team. Therefore, if you ever experience any problems, you are to heavily rely on the site's Frequently Asked Questions, for the chance of receiving any response is almost non-existent if you were to notify them via e-mail of problems you are experiencing.

If you have built or plan to build a web site containing large amounts of data, then you will find that a free web host can be quite limiting. Most free hosts only provide you with 5 to 10 MB of space, which means you will never be able to expand your site and go beyond your given amount of disk space -- without converting to a paid host. Rather, it would be more efficient to build traffic to your own .com address, and the more disk space you occupy, the more money you pay.

Many free hosts do not allow you to earn money from your pages. This means you are not permitted to sell advertising space to the various advertising agencies. This is perfectly fine if you have a homepage about yourself or your friends, but if you run a business site, you are likely losing out on potential advertising revenues. Therefore, if you plan on selling advertising space on your web site, it is strongly suggested that you pay for web hosting.

If you plan on building an online store, you are going to want a secure server (https://), whereby secure online credit card processing can be made possible. Free hosts do not support a secure web server, and as such, customers are going to have doubts when it comes to making an online payment. Similarly, most free web hosts do not support extensions other than .html. Therefore, if you plan on building a large web site with the same navigation on each page, you are going to want a server that is SSI enabled, which means documents can end in .shtml. In brief, SSI gives you the ability to alter the navigation style on one page, having that same alteration found on all corresponding pages -- without having to go through the navigation code of each and every page individually. As you can see SSI can save you a great deal of time and frustration. SSI is one of the many alternate functions a paid web host can support, whereby your average free host could not.

Probably the most obvious reason one would want to pay for web hosting is because you are entitled to make use of your own .com, .net, or .org domain name -- that is, providing you have gone through the registration process first. By establishing your site on a free web server, means that the URL to your site would be long and difficult to remember. In the case of Geocities, one of the more common free web hosts, a typical URL would resemble "http://www.geocities.com/Area51/ Shadowlands/ 2719/ Food/ pizza.htm.". Noticeably, such an address is long, thus difficult to remember, and by far unprofessional.

As you are now familiar with, a paid web host, in most cases, outweighs the benefits of a free host. In summary, free web hosting is ideal for homepages, and for individuals who are just beginning to learn the Hypertext Mark-up Language. For business, whether being small or large, and other commercial uses, paid web hosting is the outmost complete solution. Just remember the old saying: "You get what you pay for.".
